Berehove (Ukrainian:Берегове;Russian:Береговое;Crimean Tatar:Kastropol fromGreek:Καστρόπολις,romanized: Kastròpolis,lit. 'castle-city') is anurban-type settlement[a] in theYalta Municipality of theAutonomous Republic of Crimea, a territory recognized by a majority of countries as part ofUkraine andannexed byRussia as theRepublic of Crimea.[2]
Berehove is located on Crimea's southern shore at an elevation of 77metres (253 ft).[1] The settlement is located 10.5 km (6.5 mi) west fromSimeiz, which it is administratively subordinate to.[2] Its population was 478 in the2001 Ukrainian census.[2] Current population:374 (2014 Census).[3]
According to theUkrainian national census in 2001, Berehove had a population of 478 inhabitants. It is estimated thatUkrainians constitute a majority in the settlement, followed by a large ethnicRussian minority and smallerBelarusian andCrimean Tatar communities. The majority of all non-Russian ethnic groups in the town speaks theRussian language as their primary tongue, with the only exception being the Crimean Tatar community.[4] The exact native language composition was as follows:[5]
