TheBerau Gulf (Indonesian:Teluk Berau), formerly theMacCleur Gulf, separates theVogelkop (Doberai) andBomberai Peninsulas ofWestern New Guinea. It opens on theCeram Sea to the west and ends inBintuni Bay to the east.
Berau Bay is formed by the broadening ofBintuni Bay to the east and separates theVogelkop Peninsula to the north from theBomberai Peninsula (with its western extremity, theFakfak Peninsula) to the south. To the west is the openSeram Sea. The islands ofOgar andArguni are located off the Fakfak peninsula.
The area is part of the Indonesian province ofPapua Barat. The administrative district ofFakfak lies on the southern coast, while the northern coast (the southern coast of the Vogelkop) belongs to the administrative districts ofTeluk Bintuni andSorong Selatan (South Sorong).[1]
