Description

Bellwether Bar operates in theThomas Graham Building onStark Street, insoutheast Portland'sMount Tabor neighborhood.[2] The interior has wooden booths and a backyard garden with cherry trees and wisteria.[3][4][5]

The food menu includes a bacon cheeseburger,pan-seared chicken thighs, andcurry withcreme fraiche,[6] as well as chicken liver mousse,[7] grilledprawns,[8]pork chops withrhubarb andshallots, sour cream and oniondeviled eggs,[5] acassoulet with a turnip-white bean salad, and harissa roasted chicken with dill-coastedFrench fries.[3] Bellwether also serves beer, cocktails, and wine.[4][8]

Bellwether Bar operates in the space that previously housed Caldera Public House. Ansel Vickery is a co-owner.[2] Alex Yoder and Jimmy Askren have been chefs,[9][10] and Beau Burtnick (Bistro Agnes) has worked the bar.[11]

Reception

In 2023, Carrie Uffindell ofEater Portland wrote, "The food here is worth the visit alone; the vibes are just a bonus."[3] In 2024, the website'sBrooke Jackson-Glidden and Thom Hilton included Bellwether in a list of recommended romantic restaurants in the city for a date night,[8] and Rebecca Roland included the business in an overview of Portland's "essential" cocktail bars with "exceptional" drinks.[12] Jackson-Glidden and Asia Alvarez also included the bar in a list of "foolproof first date spots for every kind of Portlander",[4] and Nathan Williams recommended Bellwether for the "standout" patio.[5]Karen Brooks and others included Bellwether inPortland Monthly's 2024 list of the city's fifty best restaurants.[13] The business was included inTime Out Portland's 2025 list of the city's eighteen best restaurants.[14]
