Belgian Sportsman of the Year

Title granted to a male Belgian athlete

TheBelgianSportsman of the Year (Dutch:Sportman van het jaar;French:Sportif belge de l'année;German:Sportler des Jahres) is elected at the end of each year by professional sportjournalists and former winners,[1] annually since 1967. ABelgian Sportswoman of the Year title has been given out since 1975. Top winners includeIngrid Berghmans (8 wins),Kim Clijsters (8) andEddy Merckx (6).[2]

More categories were added in 1997, with theBelgian Sportsteam of the Year, 1998 with theBelgian Talent of the Year, 2010 with theBelgian Paralympic Athlete of the Year and lastly in 2011 theBelgian Coach of the Year.[3]

The youngest male winner of the Belgian sportsman of the year isRemco Evenepoel who won the award at the age of 19.[4]The youngest female winner isCarine Verbauwen, who won the award at the age of 13.[5]
