Beechhurst is a neighborhood in the northeastern section of theNew York Cityborough ofQueens. It is northeast ofWhitestone, bordered by theEast River to the north, theCross Island Parkway to the south, and the approaches to theThrogs Neck andWhitestone bridges to the east and west, respectively. It is also bordered by the westernmost section ofLong Island Sound.
Beechhurst is an area with a diverse mix of housing. Beechhurst is part of theNew York City Police Department's 109th Precinct and is part ofQueens Community District 7.[1]
During thesilent film era, Beechhurst was a favorite vacation area for the rich and famous. Estates lined the waterfront, including the Arthur and Dorothy Dalton Hammerstein House, the former house ofArthur Hammerstein andDorothy Dalton, which is aNew York City designated landmark.[2] The Beechhurst Towers hotel (now a co-op apartment building) was a favorite of actressMary Pickford and was frequented by many Broadway and early movie stars, including theMarx Brothers andW.C. Fields.
IndustrialistHarvey Firestone owned an estate on the Beechhurst waterfront, visited frequently by his son’s friends Zelda andF. Scott Fitzgerald.
TheNew York City Bus'sQ15 andQ61 local buses provide access to and from theNew York City Subway'sFlushing–Main Street station (7 and <7> trains) on theIRT Flushing Line. TheMTA Bus Company'sQM2 andQM32 express buses run to Manhattan.[3]
