It is located at 1,285 feet (392 m) above sea level in a hollow betweenBeacon Mountain andScofield Ridge, in the neighboringTown of Fishkill, very close to thePutnam County line. It was created in 1922[1] by dammingDry Brook, a tributary ofFishkill Creek.

In 2022, a 34 year old Beacon resident drowned after trespassing to swim in the reservoir, although swimming and fishing are barred. State police divers recovered his body the next day, blaming the incident on the combination of drugs and alcohol in his system.[3]
