Bayswater is a small neighborhood in theNew York Cityborough ofQueens, on the eastern end of theRockaway Peninsula. The community is located to the northwest ofFar Rockaway, along the southeastern shore ofJamaica Bay.
One of Bayswater's early developers wasWilliam Trist Bailey, who had purchased the property and laid out the community around 1878, hence the street names Bailey Court and Trist Place.[3] Once the location of a number of summer hotels such as the Elstone Park and the Sunset Lodge, Bayswater is now a year-round residential neighborhood. Bayswater has a diverse population with large numbers ofBlack andOrthodox Jewish residents. The Bayswater Civic Association represents the area.
Bayswater is located inQueens Community District 14 and its ZIP Code is 11691.[4] It is patrolled by theNew York City Police Department's 101st Precinct. Bayswater is served by limitedQ22 bus service.
The Bayswater section was laid out about 1878 by William Trist Bailey, who purchased the property from J.B. and W. W. Cornell. The first Rockaway hunt with hounds started from this spot and the first yacht club was erected there.
