TheBattle of Paranthan was a military conflict over control ofParanthan,Sri Lanka between the58 Division of theSri Lankan Military and theLiberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) as an engagement of theNorthern Theatre ofEelam War IV during theSri Lankan civil war.[1] Fought from December 30, 2008 to January 1, 2009, the Army announced on the January 1 that it had claimed the land.[2][3] The Army indicated that it had previously claimed the town in September 1996 during the campaign ofSathjaya I andSathjaya II, but had withdrawn fortactical reason in September 1998.[4]
