TheBattle of Mérida was fought between theSuebi and theVandals at modernMérida, Spain, in 428. The battle took place while the Vandals were stationed in southern Spain under the leadership ofGenseric and were preparing to invadeAfrica. The Suebi had previously capturedGallaecia and were expanding intoLusitania. Under their leaderHeremigarius, the Suebi decided to attack the Vandals. At Mérida the Suebi suffered a devastating defeat, and their king Heremigarius drowned while fleeing across theGuadiana. Genseric subsequently crossed into Africa,capturingHippo Regius in August 431.[1]
