"Bash" is the fifteenth episode of thefifth season of the American musical television seriesGlee, and the 103rd episode overall. Written byIan Brennan and directed by Brad Buecker, it aired onFox in the United States on April 8, 2014. Special guest starWhoopi Goldberg returns as NYADA deanCarmen Tibideaux, and the episode features several songs by Broadway composerStephen Sondheim.
Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) is attacked in agay-bashing incident after having a fight with Rachel.Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) continues her journey toward her Broadway debut inFunny Girl and decides that NYADA is holding her back and quits college.[1] She, Kurt, andBlaine Anderson (Darren Criss) perform at NYADA.[2]
The episode features several songs by Broadway composer and lyricistStephen Sondheim.[3] A number of these were filmed on location in the Walt Disney Concert Hall building, which is used for the NYADA Round Room concert hall.[2]
Special guest starWhoopi Goldberg returns as NYADA deanCarmen Tibideaux. Recurring characters appearing in this episode include aspiring singerMercedes Jones (Amber Riley), Kurt's fatherBurt Hummel (Mike O'Malley) andFunny Girl producer Sidney Greene (Michael Lerner).[1]
Six songs from the episode are being released on a six-track EP with the titleGlee: The Music, Bash. These include an original song, "Colorblind", performed by Riley;Aretha Franklin's "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," also performed by Riley; and four Sondheim songs: "Broadway Baby" fromFollies, performed by Michele and Criss; "No One Is Alone" fromInto the Woods sung by Michele, Criss and Colfer; "Not While I'm Around" fromSweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street sung by Criss, Michele, Riley andChord Overstreet (although Criss performs the song as a solo in the episode); and "I'm Still Here" fromFollies, performed by Colfer.[4]
