Barry McCrea (born 15 October 1974) is anIrish writer and academic. He grew up inDalkey,County Dublin, and was educated at theDalkey School Project,Gonzaga College, andTrinity College, Dublin (1993–1997) where he studied French and Spanish literature. He was elected a Foundation Scholar in 1995. He received a Ph.D. fromPrinceton University in 2004. He taught Comparative Literature atYale University, where he was appointed full professor in 2012. He holds a chair in literature at theUniversity of Notre Dame.
His novelThe First Verse was published byCarroll & Graf in 2005. It was awarded the 2006Ferro-Grumley Prize for fiction, and nominated for anAmerican Library Association award. The plot explores the concept of theSortes Virgilianae.
The First Verse was a bestseller in Spanish, published asLiterati (DestinoLibro, 2006) and in German asDie Poeten der Nacht (Aufbau, 2008).
His academic bookLanguages of the Night won the René Wellek prize for best book of 2016.
