Barry HindessFASSA (11 July 1939 — 19 May 2018) was an emeritus Professor in the School of Social Sciences atAustralian National University.[1][2] He was for many years an academicsociologist in the UK (mainly at theUniversity of Liverpool) and has published widely on social and political theory, and on the history of political thought.[3][4]
Hindess was one of the editors ofTheoretical Practice which in the 1970s critically examined theStructural Marxism ofLouis Althusser. With other editors such as his former pupil,Paul Hirst,Tony Cutler andAthar Hussain, this interrogation eventually undermined their original support for Althusser.[5] One of Hindess's doctoral students isMaria Bargh, Professor of Politics and Māori Studies atVictoria University of Wellington in New Zealand.[6]
Hindess held a BA fromOxford University, and a MA and PhD fromUniversity of Liverpool. He was elected Fellow of theAcademy of the Social Sciences in Australia in the political science discipline in 1995.[7]
