Ballomar orBallomarios (AD 140 – AD 170-180) was a leader of theMarcomanni during theMarcomannic Wars.
The name "Ballomar" can be broken down into twoCeltic elements,ballo- meaning "limb, member" (cf.GaulishballosIrishball), andmaro meaning "great" (cf.Gaulishmaros,Welshmawr,Irishmór).[1];[2];[3]
Ballomar is first mentioned byCassius Dio as conducting peace talks with thegovernor ofPannonia Superior,Marcus Jallius Bassus, following the breakthrough of thelimes by his allies theGermanicLombards andUbii. Ballomar led the great invasion ofItaly by a coalition of Celtic and Germanic tribes in 167-170 AD, which was the first time a hostile force had entered Italy since theCimbri ofBoiorix during theCimbrian War. Ballomardefeated a force of 20,000 Roman soldiers near Carnuntum, destroyed Opitergium (Oderzo) and besiegedAquilea.
Ballomar might be the character on episode XXV on theColumn of Marcus Aurelius, who surrenders on behalf of the Marcomannic toMarcus Aurelius. The dating of this episode is around 172 AD.
