Baix Maestrat (Valencian:[ˈbajʒmaesˈtɾat];Spanish:Bajo Maestrazgo[ˈbaxomaesˈtɾaθɣo]) is a coastalcomarca located in the north of theprovince ofCastellón,Valencian Community,Spain. The capital of thecomarca isVinaròs.

Municipalities of Baix Maestrat

Geography

Thecomarca borders to the north-west with the province ofTeruel (Aragon), to the north-east with the province ofTarragona (Catalonia), to the east with theMediterranean Sea, to the south with thecomarca ofPlana Alta (Castellón,Valencia) and to the west with thecomarcas ofAlt Maestrat (Castellón,Valencia) andEls Ports (Castellón,Valencia).

Within thecomarca liesSerra d'Irta, an 18.8 km long mountain range and the largest undeveloped coastal area within the Valencian Community. The range includes theNatural Park of Serra d'Irta, which was declared a protected area by theValencian Regional Government on July 16, 2002.

Economic activities

The area's traditional economic activities includeagriculture (citrus fruits,olive trees,artichokes) andfishing. Artichokes fromBenicarló are covered by a geographicdesignation of origin.

The currentcomarca of Baix Maestrat also includes the historicalsubcomarcas ofTinença de Benifassà and Plana de Vinaròs. The localities ofAlbocàsser andTírig (today located inAlt Maestrat), andLes Coves de Vinromà,Sarratella,La Torre d'en Doménec, andVilanova d'Alcolea (inPlana Alta), were also formerly part of the historiccomarca.
