Bagnoregio (Italian pronunciation:[ˌbaɲɲoˈrɛːdʒo]) is acomune (municipality) in theProvince of Viterbo in the Italian region ofLazio, located about 90 kilometres (56 mi) northwest ofRome and about 28 kilometres (17 mi) north ofViterbo.

History

The current main town was in ancient times a suburb of the hill town in the same comune now known asCivita di Bagnoregio. In ancient times this was calledNovempagiandBalneum Regium, whence the medieval name ofBagnorea.

During the barbarian invasions of Italy, between the sixth and ninth centuries, the city was taken several times by theOstrogoths and theLombards.Charlemagne is said to have included it in thePatrimonium Petri, and theEmperor Louis I to have added it to thePapal States in 822.

It is famous as the birthplace (more specificallyCivita di Bagnoregio) of the philosopherBonaventure in the early 13th century. WriterBonaventura Tecchi also hailed from Bagnoregio.
