Daiane Menezes Rodrigues (born 15 April 1983), commonly known asBagé,[a] is a Brazilian formerfootballer. She played as adefender for various Brazilian clubs and for theBrazil national team.
Bagé was born inBagé,Rio Grande do Sul.[1] She began playingindoor football for a local team called Celeste, and was thenscouted byGrêmio. At Grêmio she was converted from adefensive midfielder to acentral defender, and that became her permanent playing position for the rest of her career.[2] In 2003 she moved to São Bernardo at the suggestion of her youth international teammateCristiane.[3]
In January 2010 Bagé leftBotucatu, where she had won the 2006Taça Brasil, forSão José.[4] She played for São José in the2014 International Women's Club Championship, featuring in the Brazilian club's 2–0 final win over Englishwild card entrantArsenal.[2]
The later part of Bagé's career was disrupted by knee injuries: ananterior cruciate ligament injury to her right knee in July 2013, followed by an identical injury in the left knee in April 2017 and a torn knee cartilage in October 2018.[5] She left São José in January 2021.[6]
Bagé played for Brazil at the2002 FIFA U-20 Women's World Championship.[7][8]
In November 2006 Bagé made her senior international debut inBrazil's 6–0South American Women's Football Championship win overVenezuela atEstadio José María Minella,Mar del Plata.[9]
Bagé was recalled to the national team just before the2011 FIFA Women's World Cup, where she played as asweeper alongsideAline andÉrika in aback three.[10] In Brazil's quarterfinal defeat by theUnited States, Bagé scored a second-minuteown goal and had the only missed attempt for either team in thepenalty shootout.[11] Nevertheless she retained the support of her teammates.[12]
In January 2012 Bagé was appointed to thecaptaincy of the national team, and described as "a born leader" by the coachJorge Barcellos.[13] At the beginning of the2012 Summer Olympics tournament in London, she had 28caps for the national team.[14]
Bagé and her São José teammate Priscilinha had aside job sellingice cream at theEstádio Martins Pereira in 2012.[15] In 2013 the duo also opened acar wash business.[16] In 2014 Bagé was criticised for appearing in promotional materials for the fraudulentinternet phone service companyTelexfree.[17]
