Badema (born 1965) is aChinese actress and singer ofMongolian ethnicity best known for her role inNorjmaa, which earned her aBest Actress Award in the30th Golden Rooster Awards.[1][2]
Badema was born inEjin Banner,Alxa League,Inner Mongolia in 1965, to a family of singers. She attended literary and artistic activities since she was a teenager, and she is good at traditional Mongolian folk long song. In 1989 she graduated fromCentral Conservatory of Music, majoring in vocal music.
Badema's first leading role came withUlrike Ottinger's 1989 West German drama film[3]Joan of Arc of Mongolia, alongsideIrm Hermann andPeter Kern. The movie was entered into the39th Berlin International Film Festival.[4] In 2017 it screened for a week at theMuseum of Modern Art.[5] The movie talks about "a group of cosmopolitan women passengers aboard the Trans-Siberian/Mongolian Railway," who are taken captive by the warrior princess Ulan Iga.[6]
In 2013 she played Pagma inNikita Mikhalkov's 1991 movieUrga (released in North America asClose to Eden). The movie was well received,[7] and won theGolden Lion at theVenice Film Festival and Best European Film at theEuropean Film Awards. It was also nominated for anAcademy Award for Best Foreign Film,[8] and for aGolden Globe in the same category. The movie tells about Gombo, his wife (Badema), and their family, and of their friendship with stranded Russian truck driver Sergei.[9]
In 1997 she was in Wei Lu'sJourney to Western Xia Empire, and in 2005 she played Bilike's mother inNing Hao'sMongolian Ping Pong.[10] In 2008 she played the title role inBayin'sLast Princess of Royal Blood: Tsetsenhangru.[10]
Her greatest achievement so far came with the movieNorjmaa, also directed by Bayin, where she plays the title role. Badema won Best Actress Award at the 33rdFajr International Film Festival, and the movie won the Best Film Award at the same awards. Badema won Best Actress at the Yakutsk International Film Festival, andBest Actress at the30th Golden Rooster Awards.[11][12]
Badema was married toBayin (巴音额日乐), who is also a notable actor and director in China.[13][14]
