On May 29, 2019, it was announced that the ceremony would be hosted for the first time by actressRegina Hall.[3][4] On June 13, 2019, it was announced that special awards would be presented toMary J. Blige, who received the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award;[5]Tyler Perry, who was given the Ultimate Icon Award;[6] andNipsey Hussle, who was posthumously honored with the Humanitarian Award.[7]
