Bạc Liêu (Vietnamese:[ɓàːkliəw]) is a former provincial city and capital of the formerBạc Liêu Province in theMekong Delta region in southernVietnam. It is a medium-sized town with a population of 156,110 in 2019.[1] The former name of the city isVĩnh Lợi.[2]

History

The name Bạc Liêu is based on the Chinese pronunciation of a Khmer name[3] (Pol Leav ពលលាវ in Khmer). In the 1950s the area was a center ofHuỳnh Phú Sổ'sHòa Hảo religion after Sổ was released there.[4]
