Ayutla (Spanish pronunciation:[aˈʝutla]) is amunicipality in theSan Marcos Department ofGuatemala. It is situated along theSuchiate River natural border withMexico in the southern part of the department. The municipality center is Ciudad Tecún Umán. There is a combinedroad and rail bridge known asPuente Rodolfo Robles linking Ayutla toCiudad Hidalgo inChiapas,Mexico.[3]
There exists arailway which was rebuilt in 2019[4]
In December 2019, theU.S. Treasury Department sanctioned Ayutla's mayor, Erick Zúñiga, under theForeign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act, alleging Zúñiga to be "a major drug trafficker," while also alleging that Zúñiga controls a drug trafficking organization and "supplies cocaine to Mexico'sSinaloa Cartel ."[5]
