Avgust Karlovich Tsivolko, also spelled asTsivolka (Russian:Август Карлович Циволько) (1810 – March 28 (O.S. March 16), 1839) was a Russiannavigator andArctic explorer.[1]
In 1834–1835, Avgust Tsivolko took part in thePakhtusov expedition towardsNovaya Zemlya.[1][2] They charted the entire east coast ofYuzhny Island and much of the east coast ofSeverny Island.[3] In 1837, Tsivolko commanded aschooner namedKrotov during theBaer expedition towards Novaya Zemlya.[1] He was the one to map theMatochkin Strait in the course of this expedition.[citation needed] In 1838 Tsivolko was put in charge of the mapping expedition and sent towards the northern shores of Novaya Zemlya.[1] Avgust Tsivolko died ofscurvy during this expedition.[1][2]
A gulf in theKara Sea and a group of islands in theNordenskiöld Archipelago are named after Avgust Tsivolko.[citation needed]
