Austin Briggs (September 8, 1908 – October 10, 1973)[1] was acartoonist andillustrator. Born inHumboldt,Minnesota he grew up inDetroit,Michigan before moving toNew York City as a teenager. After working for a while at anadvertising agency, he began providing illustrations for the "upmarket"pulp magazineBlue Book.[2] Briggs later became an assistant to the cartoonistAlex Raymond onFlash Gordon and succeeded him onSecret Agent Corrigan.[2] In 1940, he drew aFlash Gordondaily strip which he stayed on until about 1944; he moved on to creating illustrations for books and magazines such asReader's Digest andThe Saturday Evening Post. He was one of the founding faculty for theFamous Artists School.[2]
In 1969, he was elected to theSociety of Illustrators' Hall of Fame.
Briggs died fromleukemia inParis, where he had retired.
