Aurès (Arabic:أَوْرَاس,romanized: Awrās) is anatural region located in the mountainous area of theAurès range, in easternAlgeria. The region includes theAlgerian provinces ofBatna,Tebessa,Constantine,Khenchela,Oum El Bouaghi,Souk Ahras andBiskra.
The Aurès region is characterized by its montaneous terrain and by the BerberChaoui ethnic group, which historically has inhabited the area. The rugged terrain of the Aurès has made the region one of the least developed areas in theMaghreb. Traditionally, the women of the region woretattoos.[1]
It was in the Aurès region that theAlgerian War of Independence was started byBerber independence fighters such asMostefa Ben Boulaïd, who operated from the area.[2] A district ofAlgeria that existed during and after the war, from 1962 to 1974, was named after the region.
