Aung Thu (Burmese:အောင်သူ[àʊɴθù]; born 8 July 1955) is a Burmese politician who wasMinister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation ofMyanmar (Burma) from 2018 to 2021.
Aung Thu was born on 8 July 1955 to Ba Thaung, a goldsmith, and Khin Lay, inYesagyo, Burma (now Myanmar).[1] He holds a doctorate degree inmathematics.[1] Aung Thu is married to Khin Thida, and has one daughter, Thiri Thinza Aung.[1]
On 22 March 2016, Aung Thu was nominated as Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation inPresidentHtin Kyaw'sCabinet. On 24 March, theAssembly of the Union confirmed his nomination.[2][3][4] On 1 February, during the2021 Myanmar coup d'état, Aung Thu was placed underhouse arrest by theMyanmar Armed Forces.[5]
He previously served asAmyotha HluttawMP forYangon Region № 6 constituency.[6][7]
