Auga (French pronunciation:[oɡa];Occitan:Augar) is acommune in thePyrénées-Atlantiquesdepartment in theNouvelle-Aquitaine region of south-westernFrance.

Geography

Auga is located some 20 km north ofPau and 35 km east ofOrthez. Access to the commune is by the D40 road which branches off the D944 just south ofMéracq and goes south through the length of the commune and the village before continuing to join the D834 nearSauvagnon in the south. The D220 road goes south from the village toViven. The commune is mostly farmland with scattered forests.[3]

ThePyrénées-Atlantiques Interurban Network bus line has a stop in the commune on route 842 fromMalaussanne to Pau.

TheLuy de France flows north up the eastern side of the commune and continues north-west to join theLuy de Béarn to form the Luy north-east ofCastel-Sarrazin.[3]

Toponymy

The commune name inbéarnais isAugar.Michel Grosclaude suggested the etymology is Gascon coming fromaugar meaning "marshy terrain".[13]

History

Auriol Centulle, third son ofCentule IV, Viscount of Béarn, and Angèle d'Oloron, was lord ofClarac,Igon,Baudreix, Boeil, and Auga.

Paul Raymond noted on page 17 of the 1863 dictionary that the commune had twoLay Abbeys,vassals of theViscounts of Béarn:Abadie-Susan andAbadie-Jusan. In 1385, Auga had 22fires and depended on thebailiwick ofPau. Auga was also aruffebaronnie, vassal of the Viscounts of Béarn.[14]

The fief of Abescat was also a vassal of the Viscounts of Béarn.
