Audley End railway station is on theWest Anglia Main Line serving the village ofWendens Ambo and the market town ofSaffron Walden inEssex, England. It is 41 miles 55 chains (67.1 km) down the line fromLondon Liverpool Street and is situated betweenNewport andGreat Chesterford stations. Its three-letter station code is AUD.

The station is managed byGreater Anglia.

History

The station was opened in 1845 by theEastern Counties Railway, which was absorbed into theGreat Eastern Railway, and became part of theLondon and North Eastern Railway during thegrouping of 1923. The station passed on to theEastern Region of British Railways onnationalisation in 1948.

From 1865 the station also served as a junction with thebranch line to Saffron Walden that began here and extended as far asBartlow station where it met theStour Valley Railway, but was closed in 1964. There used to be a platform at the eastern end of the station (52°00′15″N0°12′28″E / 52.0043°N 0.2077°E /52.0043; 0.2077) for terminating trains to and from Saffron Walden.

The station was served byNetwork SouthEast whenBR sectorisation was introduced in the 1980s, until it wasprivatised.

Audley End station's name was changed on signs toAudley End for Saffron Walden in 2012.Sir Alan Haselhurst, MP for Saffron Walden, unveiled the re-branded signs on Friday 25 May.

Most services at Audley End are operated byGreater Anglia usingClass 720EMUs andClass 755bi-mode trains.

During the peak hours, a number of services from London continue beyond Cambridge North toEly.

The station is also served by a small number of early morning and late eveningCrossCountry operated services between Stansted Airport andBirmingham New Street.
