Aubrey Robert David (born 11 October 1990)[1] is a professionalfootballer who plays as adefender forLiga Nacional clubMunicipal. Born in Guyana, he plays for theTrinidad and Tobago national team.[2]
David began hisprofessional football career in2009, at the age of 18, withFC South End inTrinidad and Tobago. In the middle of his second season with the club, he transferred to fellowTT Pro League clubJoe Public. However, after theEastern Lions withdrew from the league at the end of the season, David signed with theElectricity Boys of promoted clubT&TEC. In July 2012, he decided to switch toCaledonia AIA and won theFA Trophy in2012–13. In his second season with theStallions, he was loaned toFF Jaro for the2014Veikkausliiga season.[3]
David is an international footballer having made his debut forTrinidad and Tobago in February 2012. However, David also represented his nativeGuyana infriendlies againstJamaica andPanama in May 2012, before making a one-time switch back to theSoca Warriors in November 2012. David helped lead Trinidad and Tobago to the2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup[4] and the2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup[5] as a youth; and most recently represented the senior team at the2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup.[6]
After his brief stint with theGolden Jaguars ofGuyana in May 2012, David followed then national team managerJamaal Shabazz to Pro League clubCaledonia AIA prior to the2012–13 season.[7] He made his debut for theStallions of Morvant/Laventille during the group stage of the2012–13 CONCACAF Champions League againstSeattle Sounders FC ofMajor League Soccer on 2 August 2012.[8]
On 26 February 2014, David traveled toJakobstad for a trial withFinnish clubFF Jaro of theVeikkausliiga.[9]
During his two-week trial with the club, David made his debut forFF Jaro of theVeikkausliiga in aleague cup match againstSJK on 1 March 2014.[10] After a solid performance, Aubrey joined the club on a one-year loan for the2014 season after agreeing to personal terms.[3][11] Two weeks later, David started in defence atleft-back during a 2–1 defeat toKakkonen clubFC Hämeenlinna in the third round of theSuomen Cup.[12] He made his league debut as a starter in defence forFF Jaro on 6 April in a 1–0 loss toHJK. David scored his first league goal forFF Jaro againstKuPS in the 52nd minute after heading in afree kick fromHendrik Helmke on 19 April.[13] Afterwards, he solidified a place as the left-back during the club's first ten matches to leadFF Jaro to third in theleague table. Aubrey continued his consistent form over the next two months beforeyellow card accumulation ended his 18-consecutive match streak on 6 July 2014.
Two weeks later, Aubrey returned to score his second goal of the season in the 62nd minute during a 5–0 win overFC Honka.[14]
In February 2015, David went on trial withFC Shakhter Karagandy of theKazakhstan Premier League,[15] going on to sign a one-year contract with the option of a second.[16]
In December 2015, David signed withDeportivo Saprissa, the most successful club of theCosta Rican Primera División andCONCACAF, going on to sign a one-year contract with the option of a second.
On June 28, 2016,Deportivo Saprissa announced David would go on a six-month loan toFC Dallas with an option to buy.[17]
On 26 February 2017, David signed forPalloseura Kemi Kings on a two-year contract.[18]
On 6 February 2018,VPS announced the signing of David on a one-year contract.[19]
On 17 December 2018, David rejoinedDeportivo Saprissa for the 2019 season.[20]
David has representedTrinidad and Tobago on various levels of international competition, having beencapped for theunder-17,[21]under-20,[22]under-23 Olympic team,[23] and theTrinidad and Tobago national teams. He has also been capped for theGuyana national team in May 2012.
He began his international career for theunder-17 team during the2007 CONCACAF U-17 Tournament, where he made four appearances including two starts to lead theSoca Warriors to qualification for the2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup inSouth Korea. David was part of the T&T outfit that beat Jamaica 1–0 in the final CONCACAF qualifying match in Kingston to qualify for the 2007 FIFA Under 17 World Cup in South Korea, that winning goal being scored by Kevin Molino.
During the 2007 FIFA U17 World Cup, David made one appearance after he came on as a late second-half substitute forAaron Maund in Trinidad and Tobago's final match againstGermany.[4]
In March 2009, Aubrey represented theunder-20 team as hosts during the2009 CONCACAF U-20 Championship.[22] David made two starts in a 1–0 win overCanada and in a scoreless draw againstCosta Rica to secure qualification for the2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Later that year, inEgypt, David came on as a substitute in the 63rd minute forAkeem Adams in a 2–1 loss toItaly, which eliminated theSoca Warriors from the competition.[5] Two years later, David made two appearances in defence for theunder-23 team during itsCaribbeanqualification phase for theCONCACAFOlympic qualification tournament in theUnited States.[24][25] However, he did not make the final squad during the team's unsuccessfulqualification for the2012 Summer Olympics inLondon.
David made his full international debut for theTrinidad and Tobago national team on 29 February 2012 againstAntigua and Barbuda at the age of 21.[26] However, following theSoca Warriors' elimination, at the hands ofGuyana, fromqualification attempt for the2014 FIFA World Cup, David accepted an invitation to represent his nativeGuyana. In May 2012, David made his debut for theGolden Jaguars in a pair offriendlies againstJamaica andPanama. The following month, Aubrey did not feature for Guyana in the team's two losses againstMexico andCosta Rica during thethird round of qualification. As a result, David decided to make a one-time international switch back toTrinidad and Tobago in November 2012.[27]
On 16 November 2012, David scored his first international goal in his return debut for theSoca Warriors in a 3–0 win againstSuriname.[27] Aubrey went on to receive five internationalcaps to lead the national team throughqualification and a runners-up finish in the2012 Caribbean Cup to qualify for the country's firstCONCACAF Gold Cup in six years. In the build-up to the Gold Cup, David appeared as adefender in a pair of friendlies againstPeru in February and March 2013. He also started in a 1–0 loss toEstonia on 7 June during the national team's first visit to European soil since the2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.[28] After the Gold Cup draw, Trinidad and Tobago entered Group B along withEl Salvador,Haiti, andHonduras. Based on his performance in the previous friendlies, Aubrey was named in the final squad for the2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup on 28 July.[29]
Although David did not appear in theSoca Warriors' first group match against El Salvador, he came on as an early second-half substitute for injuredJoevin Jones atleft-back during the team's second match againstHaiti.[6] In the final group match between theWarriors andHonduras, David again replaced Jones as a late substitute to secure a 2–0 win and help Trinidad and Tobago advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since2000.[30] In the quarterfinals againstMexico, David made his first start of the tournament afterJoevin Jones suffered from ahamstring injury prior to the match.[31]
Two months after the2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup,Trinidad and Tobago accepted an invitation to compete in the2013 OSN Cup inSaudi Arabia. David started in defence for theSoca Warriors during their semifinal match againstUnited Arab Emirates. However, after Trinidad and Tobago conceded their third goal, Aubrey was substituted forSheldon Bateau in the 55th minute.[32] David was left off the roster, in favor of Bateau, for a friendly match againstNew Zealand in October 2013. David returned to the national team the following month and made consecutive starts during a pair of matches againstCaribbean rivalsJamaica.[33][34]
