Athanasios Konstantinou (Greek:Αθανάσιος Κωνσταντίνου, born 18 July 1959 atAthens) is a Greek politician, physician, and retiredgeneral officer currently serving as aMember of the European Parliament. He was originally elected as a member ofGolden Dawn, but is now anindependent politician.[1][citation needed]
Konstantinou is a graduate of the Corps Officers Military Academy (Greek:Στρατιωτική Σχολή Αξιωματικών Σωμάτων), which educatesHellenic Army officers in the Legal, Medical, Finance, Aviation and Auditing Corps (seeHellenic Military Academy: Overview); and theMedical School of theAristotle University of Thessaloniki.[citation needed]
As a physician, Konstantinou specialised in the pathology thecentral nervous andreproductive, systems,molecular pathology, andtoxicology inGermany andAustria. Konstantinou speaks English and German, in addition to his native Greek. He retired from theHellenic Air Force with the rank oftaxiarchos,[citation needed] equivalent to abrigadier general orair commodore.
On 15 September 2022, he was one of 16 MEPs who voted against condemning PresidentDaniel Ortega ofNicaragua for human rights violations, in particular the arrest of BishopRolando Álvarez.[2][3]
