
Astolat (/ˈæstəˌlæt,-ˌlɑːt/[1]; French:Escalot) is a legendary castle and town ofGreat Britain named inArthurian legends. It is the home ofElaine, "the lily maid of Astolat", as well of her father Sir Bernard and her brothers Lavaine and Tirre. It is known asShalott in many modern cultural references, derived fromAlfred Lord Tennyson's poem "The Lady of Shalott". In theLancelot-Grail it was said to be upstream of Camelot.
It is also calledAscolat in the Winchester Manuscript ofThomas Malory's English compilationLe Morte d'Arthur. Malory identified the legendary location with hiscontemporary castle and town ofGuildford in England.[2]
