Aster tataricus, also calledTatarian aster andTatarinow's aster,[1][2] is a member of theAster genus offlowering plants.
Known asgaemichwi (개미취) in Korean, the plant is considered achwinamul (edibleAster) variety used inKorean cuisine.
It is one of the50 fundamental herbs oftraditional Chinese medicine, where it has the namezǐwǎn (Chinese:紫菀). It has anantibacterial action, inhibiting the growth ofStaphylococcus aureus,E. coli,Bacillus dysenteriae,B. typhi,Pseudomonas andVibrio proteus.[3][citation needed]
In Japan,Aster tataricus is known asshion, or紫苑. The flower has a meaning inhanakotoba, the Japanese language of flowers, which corresponds to "I won't forget you."[4]
