Aspar Team (formerlyÁngel Nieto Team) is aGrand Prix motorcycle racing team from Spain, competing in the Moto2, Moto3 and MotoE World Championships.

History

[edit]

The team was created by formerworld championJorge Martínez in 1992, when he was still riding aHonda RS125R. For 1993 Martínez expanded his operations into the 250cc class debuting withJuan Borja. For the next two seasons the Aspar team switched toYamaha TZ125 bikes leaving the 250cc division. In 1996 Aspar started an 18-year relationship withAprilia; in those years he fielded riders likeFonsi Nieto andArnaud Vincent before entering the 250cc class again, in 2000 withAlex Debón. Between 2006 and 2011 the Aspar team won four World Championship titles in the 125cc class withÁlvaro Bautista,Gábor Talmácsi,Julián Simón andNicolás Terol. Riders that competed with the team in the 250cc class includedToni Elías,Alex de Angelis,Sebastián Porto andRandy de Puniet.

In the2010 season the Aspar team entered the MotoGP class withHéctor Barberá, who finished in twelfth place aboard aDucati Desmosedici GP10. Simón finished in second place in the inauguralMoto2 campaign, with teammateMike Di Meglio finishing in twentieth place. Both riders started the season on Honda-powered RSV Motors frames, switching to aSuter chassis after two races.Nicolás Terol finished in second place in the 125cc class while his teammateBradley Smith finished fourth, both ridingAprilia RSA 125 motorcycles.

Barberá remained with the team for2011, recording a best result of 6th at theSpanish Grand Prix. The team expanded to two bikes in2012, switching from Ducati toART.Aleix Espargaró andRandy de Puniet dominated the recently created CRT (Claiming Rule Teams) class for two straight years. In2014, Aspar entered twoHonda bikes, after hiring former World ChampionNicky Hayden to partnerHiroshi Aoyama. The duo scored points regularly, but Espargaró claimed a 3rd straight title in the CRT class withForward Racing. IrishmanEugene Laverty joined the team in2015, the last year for Hayden in the World Championship before switching to theSuperbike World Championship.

Before the2018 season began, the team changed their name fromAspar Racing Team toÁngel Nieto Team, as a tribute by former team principal Jorge Fernandez to his late compatriotÁngel Nieto. The team also announced Ángel's sonGelete as the new team principal.[1]
