In theanatomy of humans and homologous primates, theascending colon is the part of thecolon located between thececum and thetransverse colon.
The ascending colon is smaller in calibre than the cecum from where it starts. It passes upward, opposite thecolic valve, to the under surface of theright lobe of the liver, on the right of thegall-bladder, where it is lodged in a shallow depression, thecolic impression; here it bends abruptly forward and to the left, forming theright colic flexure (hepatic) where it becomes the transverse colon.
It is retained in contact with the posterior wall of the abdomen by theperitoneum, which covers its anterior surface and sides, its posterior surface being connected byloose areolar tissue with theiliacus, quadratus lumborum, aponeurotic origin oftransversus abdominis, and with the front of the lower and lateral part of the right kidney.
Sometimes the peritoneum completely invests it and forms a distinct but narrowmesocolon.
It is in relation, in front, with the convolutions of theileum and the abdominal walls.
Parasympathetic innervation to the ascending colon is supplied by thevagus nerve.Sympathetic innervation is supplied by the thoracicsplanchnic nerves.
The ascending colon is on the right side of the body (barring any malformations). The termright colon ishypernymous toascending colon in precise use; many casual mentions of the right colon chiefly concern the ascending colon.
