Hot Springs to Little Rock

[edit]
Old photo of Highway 5 and Highway 7 junction near Hot Springs, the former southern terminus. This junction was replaced by aroundabout in 2023 to connect to the new Hot Springs Bypass extension.

Highway 5 begins at an interchange withUS 70 andUS 70B east of Hot Springs as atwo-lane freeway. The route meetsHighway 7 inFountain Lake at aroundabout and continues to northeast as a surface road. In the city of Fountain Lake, Highway 5 has a junction withHighway 128 before enteringSaline County andHot Springs Village.[2] Continuing east, the route serves as the southern terminus forHighway 9 atCrows. Northwest ofBenton, Highway 5 has a junction withHighway 298 before entering the city and passing several residential subdivisions. Near Saline Memorial Hospital, the route has a junction withI-30/US 67/US 70 andHighway 35. Highway 5 runs east as afrontage road paralleling I-30 towardLittle Rock. Highway 35 runs south toward downtown Benton and eventuallySheridan andMonticello.[8]

The route passes theHester-Lenz House, listed on theNational Register of Historic Places (NRHP), prior to theBryant city limits.[9] An intersection withHighway 183 (Reynolds Rd) near the historicAndrew Hunter House gives access to downtown Bryant as well as I-30.[9] Continuing east, Highway 5 intersectsHighway 835 (Woody Drive) which leads to the Alexander branch of theArkansas Department of Human Services's Youth Service Center, after which it entersPulaski County.[10]

The route meets Otter Creek Road andHighway 338 (Baseline Road), bothcollector roads for I-30/US 67/US 70 in southwest Little Rock. Entering a suburban area, Highway 5 terminates at an interchange withI-430 and US 70.

Main Street Bridge

[edit]

TheMain Street Bridge in Little Rock carries a hidden Highway 5 designation. The route is 0.38 miles (0.61 km) in span and multi-lane divided.[1]

[edit]

The route begins just south ofI-57/US 67/US 167 atHighway 321 andHighway 367 inCabot and runs north to crossHighway 89 andHighway 319. Highway 5 continues north to meetUS 64 south ofEl Paso andHighway 310 nearRomance. Highway 5 and Highway 310 form aconcurrency that runs untilHighway 36 inRose Bud.[11] The route continues north toHeber Springs, where it begins to concur withHighway 16/Highway 25.

Highway 5, Highway 9 and Highway 14 near Mountain View

Highway 5 leaves Highway 25 near Wolf Bayou, when Highway 5 begins to run withHighway 87, namedMountain View Road. The two routes meetHighway 14 in front of the Stone County Medical Center in southMountain View.[12] Highway 5/Highway 14/Highway 87 run briefly west to Sylamore Avenue, when they meetHighway 9. Highway 5/Highway 9/Highway 14 run north through town toAllison, when Highway 5 continues northward alone. Passing through theOzark National Forest, Highway 5 emerges nearCalico Rock.[13] The route takes a turn northwest, concurring withHighway 177 nearNorfork. Highway 5 crossesUS 62 southeast ofMountain Home. The route becomes9th Street, meetingUS 62B andHighway 201 in downtown Mountain Home. Highway 5 continues northwest toMidway, after which it heads north to theMissouri state line, where it continues asMissouri Route 5.

Missouri Route 5 runs entirely across Missouri and eventually becomesIowa Highway 5.

History

[edit]

Highway 5 was created in 1926 as one of theoriginal numbered state highways in Arkansas.[14] At time of creation, Highway 5 did not extend south of Little Rock. The segment between Little Rock and Benton is the former alignment of US 67/US 70 in that area and was re-designated as Highway 5 upon completion of the freeway segment of US 67/US 70 (now I-30) in 1955.[15]

TheArkansas State Highway Commission truncated Highway 5 at I-430 and renumbered the remainder of Stagecoach Road as US 70 on December 9, 2021 in a deal with the cities of Little Rock, North Little Rock, andPulaski County to cover the relocation costs forRock Region Metro as part of the "30 Crossing" project on I-30.[16][17]

Connection to Hot Springs Bypass extension

[edit]

In 2023, a freeway was completed, connecting Highway 5 directly to the Hot Springs Bypass. Highway 5 now begins at an interchange with US 70 and US 70B east of Hot Springs and continues north to where it meetsHighway 7 inFountain Lake. The new section was originally scheduled to open in fall 2022; however, thenational supply chain crisis delayed the project. Issues with aretaining wall also contributed to the delay, moving the completion date to September 18, 2023. The roadway is atwo-lane freeway.[18]
