Arioald was theLombard king ofItaly from 626 to 636. Duke ofTurin, he married the princessGundeberga, daughter of KingAgilulf and his queenTheodelinda. He was, unlike his father-in-law, anArian who did not acceptCatholicism.

Arioald deposed Agilulf's heirAdaloald with the support of the nobility,[1] for Adaloald had gone mad. Upon becoming king, he had his wife locked up in amonastery, accusing her of plotting against him withTasson, duke of Friuli. He also reestablished Arianism in the Lombard kingdom. His only recorded wars were against theAvars, whom he succeeded in repelling during an attempted invasion of northeast Italy.[2]
