
Area code 928 is a telephonearea code in theNorth American Numbering Plan for theU.S. state ofArizona. The numbering plan area comprises the northern, eastern, and western portions of the state.[1] It includesBeaver Dam, theGrand Canyon,Flagstaff,Holbrook,Lake Havasu City,Littlefield,Kingman,Prescott,Sedona,Wickenburg,Winslow andYuma, and also serves most ofGreenlee County, some areas on the western and northern fringes of thePhoenix metropolitan area, such asLake Pleasant Regional Park inPeoria, and the Arizona portion of theNavajo Nation.
The numbering plan area was created in a split ofarea code 520 on June 23, 2001, due mainly to population gains inTucson,Yuma, andFlagstaff.
Prior to October 2021, area code 928 had telephone numbers assigned for thecentral office code 988. In 2020,988 was designated nationwide as a dialing code for theNational Suicide Prevention Lifeline, which created a conflict for exchanges that permitseven-digit dialing. This area code was therefore scheduled to transition toten-digit dialing by October 24, 2021.[2]
