TheAquifoliales are an order offlowering plants, including theAquifoliaceae (holly) family, and also theHelwingiaceae (2-5 species of temperateAsianshrubs) and thePhyllonomaceae (4 species ofCentral Americantrees andshrubs). In 2001, the familiesStemonuraceae andCardiopteridaceae were added to this order.[4] Thiscircumscription of Aquifoliales was recognized by theAngiosperm Phylogeny Group when they published theAPG II system in 2003.[5] In theCronquist system, there is no Aquifoliales order: the Aquifoliaceae are placed within the orderCelastrales and the others are in other families.
