Anapplemartini (appletini for short) is acocktail containingvodka and one or more ofapple juice, apple cider, apple liqueur, orapple brandy. Although the drink contains novermouth by default, the term "apple martini" is consistent with the trend of calling any straightliquor in amartini glass a "martini," such as thesaketini or othervariations.[1]

This drink, originally called an Adam's Apple Martini because the bartender who created it was named Adam, was created in 1996 at Lola's West Hollywood restaurant.[2][3]

Recipe

[edit]

In its purest form, it would contain:

4 cl (1+12 oz)top shelf vodka (or gin)
2 cl (23 oz) apple juice, cider or, most often, apple pucker

Typically, the ingredients are shaken or stirred and then strained into a cocktail glass.

Variations

[edit]

A sweet andsour mix can also be added before shaking.

Optionally, vermouth may be included, as in a regular martini.

A similar cocktail can be made withMartini Bianco white vermouth and apple juice in along drink glass filled with ice.[4]

In popular culture

[edit]

TV and movies have used male characters drinking Appletinis to signify them as effeminate and presenting as gay, seen most prominently in the case ofJohn "J.D." Dorian inScrubs. The characterization is seen in other depictions such asPhil Dunphy inModern Family,Alan Harper inTwo and a Half Men andTed Mosby inHow I Met Your Mother.[5][6] Professional wrestlerChristopher Daniels incorporated the drinking of appletinis into hisheel, "snarky [and] sarcastic", character work beginning in 2012 forTotal Nonstop Action.[7][8] Other media depict the cocktail as drunk by "college-aged girls" and "uncultured types".[6]
