Apicystis is agenus of parasitic alveolates of thephylumApicomplexa.
There are two species currently recognized in this genus:A. bombi andA. cryptica
Apicystis bombi was first described by Liu in 1974 as a species in the genusMattesia.
In 1996, Lipa and Triggiani transferred this organism to a new genusApicystis on the basis ofmorphology andlife cycle.[1]
In 2020, Schoonavere et al. describedA. cryptica, associated to the bumble beesBombus pascuorum,B. sichelii andB. veteranus[2]
The species in this genus are spread by theorofaecal route.
Oocysts are ingested. Within the intestine these develop intosporozoites.
The sporozoites penetrate the gut wall and invade thehaemocoele subsequently taking up residence in the fat body.
This genus infects a number of hosts
