Antonia Sophia E. Clarke (born 24 May 1995) is an English actress and singer. Her films includeAltar (2014)[1] andAll My Friends Hate Me (2021). On television, she is known for her roles as young Emmeline in theBBC Two filmThe Thirteenth Tale (2013) andMary, Queen of Scots in theStarz seriesThe Serpent Queen (2022).[2]

Early life and education

Clarke was born inHammersmith and grew up inBrackenbury Village,West London.[3] At age 15, Clarke attendedDowne House boarding school inBerkshire. It was here she decided she wanted to be an actress.[4] She studied History of Art atGoldsmiths, University of London and later graduated withMaster of Arts in Film Aesthetics and Philosophy from theUniversity of Oxford.[5]

Career

Clarke made her television debut in an episode of the 2011 action seriesM.I. High. She made her film debut in the 2012 adaptation of the musicalLes Misérables, performing the song "Lovely Ladies".[6][7]

Her first major role came out as Young Emmeline in James Kent's 2013 drama filmThe Thirteenth Tale alongsideOlivia Colman andSophie Turner.[8]

In 2014, she had a small role in the romantic comedy filmMagic in the Moonlight.[9] Also in 2014 she appeared inAltar Directed By Nick Willing. The filming of the movie was described as "intimate". Clarke played "Penny Hamilton".[10]

Clarke playedMaria Feodorovna in theSky Atlantic andHBO miniseriesCatherine the Great.[11] She appeared in the 2021 comedy horrorAll My Friends Hate Me. The following year, she starred asMary, Queen of Scots in theStarz historical dramaThe Serpent Queen.

Personal life

Clarke owns a Jackadoodle dog. She has stated her favourite books areTo Kill A Mockingbird byHarper Lee andJust Kids byPatti Smith.[5]
