Antoine de Caunes (born 1 December 1953) is a French television presenter, comedian, actor, journalist, writer and film director.[2][3][4][5] He is the son of two prominent French personalities, television journalist-reporterGeorges de Caunes and television announcerJacqueline Joubert. He is the father of the actressEmma de Caunes.
He began his career writing theme songs for cartoons forAntenne 2 under the pseudonym of Paul Persavon, includingCobra andSpace Sheriff Gavan (known in France asX-Or).
His early TV appearances includedChorus (1975), the seriesLes Enfants du rock, again for A2, and then his breakthrough withNulle part ailleurs forCanal+.[6]
In 1988, De Caunes started making an English-language version of his French music programmeRapido, forJanet Street-Porter's youth and entertainment[7] programming strandDEF II, with new episodes ofRapido usually being broadcast as part of DEF II's Wednesday night schedule[8][9][10] onBBC2.[11][12] He then went on to create the long-running magazine programmeEurotrash forChannel 4, with this humorous post-pub entertainment show[7] co-presented byJean Paul Gaultier for the few series and featuring regular spots for European stars likeLolo Ferrari.[13] He also presented a short-lived chat show on Channel 4 calledLe Show. In addition, he appeared in an advertising campaign forRowntree's Fruit Pastilles ice lollies.
From 2013 until 2015, he hosted the daily evening showLe Grand Journal on Canal+.
He provided voices in theAardman Animation TV showRex the Runt.[14]
De Caunes launched a new magazineVieux, about issues faced by the elderly, in May 2024.[15]
He is a long-timeAIDS awareness campaigner, fronting the organisationSolidarité sida [fr] (AIDS Solidarity).[16]
