TheOath Against Modernism was a formal oath instituted byPope Pius X in hismotu proprioSacrorum antistitum on September 1, 1910. The oath was required of "allclergy, pastors, confessors, preachers, religious superiors, andprofessors in philosophical-theologicalseminaries"[1] of theCatholic Church. It remained in force until theCongregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, with the approval ofPaul VI, replaced it (along with theTridentine Profession of Faith [de]) with a revisedprofession of faith in 1967.[2]
The oath marked the culmination of Pius X's campaign against the theological movement ofModernism, which he analyzed and denounced asheretical in his 1907encyclicalsPascendi Dominici gregis andLamentabili sane exitu.[3][page needed]
The Oath Against Modernism is still pronounced by theSociety of Saint Pius X,[4] andsedeprivationist andsedevacantist groups such as theCongregation of Mary Immaculate Queen[5] and theIstituto Mater Boni Consilii.[6]
