Annette Carol Bening (born May 29, 1958) is an American actress. With a career spanning over four decades, she is known forher versatile work across screen and stage . Bening has receivednumerous accolades , including aBAFTA Award , twoScreen Actors Guild Awards and twoGolden Globe Awards , in addition to nominations for fiveAcademy Awards , twoTony Awards , and aPrimetime Emmy Award , making her one of few artists nominated for theTriple Crown of Acting without winning.
A graduate ofSan Francisco State University and theAmerican Conservatory Theater , Bening started her career on stage with theColorado Shakespeare Festival company in 1980, and playedLady Macbeth in 1984 at theAmerican Conservatory Theater . She made herBroadway debut in theTina Howe playCoastal Disturbances (1987) for which she received a nomination for theTony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play . Making her film debut in 1988, she gained further recognition for her role inThe Grifters (1990), for which she received her first Academy Award nomination. This acclaim continued throughout the 1990s and 2000s with further Oscar-nominated performances in the comedy-dramasAmerican Beauty (1999) andBeing Julia (2004), which respectively won her theBAFTA andGolden Globe for Best Actress . In following decades, Bening received two additional Oscar nominations for her leading roles as alesbian mother inThe Kids Are All Right (2010) and swimmerDiana Nyad in theNetflix biographical filmNyad (2023), the former of which also won her a Golden Globe. She returned to Broadway in the revival ofArthur Miller 'sAll My Sons (2019) earning another Tony nomination forBest Actress in a Play . Early life and education [ edit ] Annette Carol Bening[ 1] was born on May 29, 1958[ 2] inTopeka, Kansas ,[ 2] to Shirley Katherine (née Ashley)[ 3] and Arnett Grant Bening. Her mother was a church singer and soloist, and her father was a sales training consultant and insurance salesman.[ 4] [ 5] Her parents, originally fromIowa , were practicingEpiscopalians andconservative Republicans . She is of mostly German and English descent.[ 6] [ 7]
The youngest of four children, she has an older sister Jane, and two older brothers Bradley and Byron. The family moved toWichita, Kansas , in 1959, where she spent her early childhood. When Bening was in elementary school, her father relocated the family to San Diego, California, where she spent the remainder of her youth.[ 8]
She began acting in junior high school, playing the lead inThe Sound of Music .[ 9] She graduated in 1975 from San Diego'sPatrick Henry High School , where she studied drama.[ 10] [ 11] She then spent a year working as a cook on a charter boat taking fishing parties out on the Pacific Ocean, and scuba diving for recreation. Bening attendedSan Diego Mesa College and graduated with a degree inTheatre Arts atSan Francisco State University .[ 12]
1986–1999: Initial work, breakthrough and rise to prominence[ edit ] Bening in 1999 Bening began her career on stage with theColorado Shakespeare Festival company in 1980,[ 13] and appeared in plays at theSan Diego Repertory Theatre . She was a member of the acting company at theAmerican Conservatory Theater in San Francisco while studying acting as part of the Advanced Theatre Training Program. There, she starred in such productions as Shakespeare'sMacbeth asLady Macbeth . Bening also starred in productions ofPygmalion andThe Cherry Orchard at theDenver Center Theatre Company during the 1985–86 season. She made herBroadway debut in 1987, garnering aTony Award nomination forBest Featured Actress in a Play [ 14] and receiving aTheatre World Award for her performance as young photographer Holly Dancer inCoastal Disturbances . Bening made her film debut inThe Great Outdoors (1988), starringDan Aykroyd andJohn Candy . Her next role was as the Marquise de Merteuil inValmont (1989) oppositeColin Firth .
Bening achieved her breakthrough with her performance ascon artist Myra Langtry in the neo-noir crime thrillerThe Grifters (1990), for which she earned her first nominations for theAcademy Award for Best Supporting Actress and theBAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role .[ 15] In 1991, she portrayedVirginia Hill inBarry Levinson 's biopicBugsy , alongsideWarren Beatty . ForBugsy , she received her first nomination for theGolden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama . Bening co-starred withHarrison Ford inRegarding Henry . In 1994, Bening and Beatty starred together again, inLove Affair . In 1995, Bening played a leading role as an environmentallobbyist inThe American President withMichael Douglas , a role she followed withTim Burton 's sci-fi spoofMars Attacks! (1996), andThe Siege (1998), a thriller withDenzel Washington andBruce Willis .
Bening garnered acclaim for her starring role inSam Mendes ' directorial debut film,American Beauty (1999). She starred oppositeKevin Spacey in the dark comedy-drama about a man suffering a mid-life crisis in 90s American suburbia. The film won fiveAcademy Awards , includingBest Picture . For her performance as Carolyn Burnham, a materialistic wife engaging in an affair, Bening won theBAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role and theScreen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role , in addition to her first nomination for theAcademy Award for Best Actress [ 16] and her second nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama.[ 17]
In 1999, Bening returned to the stage for the first time in 10 years playing the title role inHedda Gabler at theGeffen Playhouse in Los Angeles. TheLos Angeles Times praised her performance saying "Bening uses her vocal instrument to fine effect, without throwing it around... In the movies you don't always hear what Bening can do with that voice, especially when she's playing virtuous, "sensible" types... But Ibsen's antiheroine—thwarted sensualist, a woman wrestling with her inner troll, belle of a ball that never comes—is neither virtuous nor sensible. She's no easy-to-read villain, either, nor a mere vindictive brat, though plenty of actresses have reduced her thus. Bening lays into the venomous sarcasm mighty heavily, but she's cagey enough to avoid reductive extremes."[ 18]
2000–2014: Established actress[ edit ] Bening starred in other films, includingIn Dreams (1999) andWhat Planet Are You From? (2000). Bening played Sue Barlow inOpen Range (2003). She earned critical acclaim for playing the eponymous lead in the comedy-dramaBeing Julia (2004). Her performance in the film earned her firstGolden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical , in addition to her second nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actress and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role.[ 19] She received nominations for thePrimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie and theGolden Globe Award for Best Actress – Miniseries or Television Film for her role ofJean Harris in theHBO filmMrs. Harris (2005).[ 20] She replacedJulianne Moore and starred in the film adaptation ofRunning with Scissors (2006), for which she earned her third nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical.[ 17] Bening starred inThe Women (2008) remake. In 2009, Bening starred in a new interpretation of theEuripides classicMedea atUCLA 's Freud Playhouse.[ 21] She received positive reviews for her performance in the independent filmMother and Child (2009).[ 22]
In 2010, she starred inThe Female of the Species ,Joanna Murray-Smith 's comedy, at theGeffen Playhouse in Los Angeles.[ 23] Later that year, Bening received critical acclaim for her performance inThe Kids Are All Right ; a reviewer said that she "deserves an Oscar" and another praised her "sublime" performance.[ 24] For her role, Bening won her second Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical.[ 17] She also received nominations for the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role, in addition to her third nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress.[ 25]

In 2014, she starred in Shakespeare'sKing Lear at theDelacorte Theater inCentral Park , as part of the Public Theatre's FreeShakespeare in the Park . In 2019, Bening returned to theBroadway stage after a 32-year absence. She starred in the revival ofArthur Miller 'sAll My Sons alongsideTracy Letts at theRoundabout Theatre Company 'sAmerican Airlines Theatre . Bening joined theMarvel Cinematic Universe playing Dr. Wendy Lawson inCaptain Marvel (2019) alongsideBrie Larson . The film was a financial box-office hit. In 2022, she acted inKenneth Branagh 'sDeath on the Nile and the comedyJerry & Marge Go Large oppositeBryan Cranston . That same year, she filmedNyad alongsideJodie Foster , where Bening portrayedlong-distance swimmer Diana Nyad . The limited series premiered with all episodes immediately available to stream on March 15, 2024.
While training at theAmerican Conservatory Theater , Bening met actor J. Steven White, marrying him in 1984. They moved to Colorado where White managed theDenver Center for the Performing Arts . They divorced in 1991.[ 39]
She has been married to actorWarren Beatty since March 3, 1992. They have four children, including actressElla Beatty .[ 40] [ 41]
