Anne Ryan Haney (née Thomas ; March 4, 1934 – May 26, 2001) was an Americancharacter actress . She appeared in small supporting roles in around 50 film and television productions and was best known for her roles as Mrs. Sellner inMrs. Doubtfire , Mrs. Chapil inThe American President and Greta inLiar Liar .
Haney was born to Robert Lee and Dorothy Margaret Thomas[ 1] on March 4, 1934, inMemphis, Tennessee .[ 2] She attendedEast High School andSouthwestern at Memphis before earning herBachelor of Arts fromUniversity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill .[ 3]
Haney began acting in 1970, appearing in commercials and in local theatrical productions in Atlanta,[ 4] Jacksonville, and Norfolk, Virginia.[ 1]
Haney appeared in theStar Trek: The Next Generation episode "The Survivors " asRishon Uxbridge , and later appeared as aBajoran arbitrator in theStar Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "Dax ". She was a regular guest-star during the syndicated run ofMama's Family , playingAlberta Meechum , the nemesis ofThelma Harper . OnOur House she played fussy neighbour Virginia Taft. She was also a recurring cast member ofL.A. Law , playing Judge Marilyn Travelini. Haney guest starred onBenson ,Cheers ,Designing Women ,The Golden Girls ,Charmed ,Boy Meets World ,Columbo ,ER ,NYPD Blue ,Curb Your Enthusiasm andAlly McBeal . She also appeared in the television moviesLBJ: The Early Years (1987) andElvis and Me (1988).
Haney also became known for a number of film appearances. In 1993, she was cast as Mrs. Sellner, a family court supervisor inMrs. Doubtfire . In 1995, she appeared as Mrs. Chapil inThe American President . In 1997, she played Greta inLiar Liar . In 1999, she appeared inForces of Nature andThe Out-of-Towners .
She was married to John Haney, a public television executive whom she met at theUniversity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , where she had been studying drama, radio, and television.[ 2] They were married from November 30, 1957, until his death on April 9, 1980;[ 3] [ 5] the marriage produced one daughter.[ 1] As for her reason for coming to Hollywood, she said, "My husband died, my daughter went to college, the dog got fleas, and the maid quit. So I had to come to Hollywood.”[ 6]
Haney died of congestiveheart failure , aged 67, at her home inStudio City, Los Angeles , California on May 26, 2001.[ 2] [ 6]
