Aniplex, Inc. (株式会社アニプレックス,Kabushiki-gaisha Anipurekkusu) is a Japanese entertainment company, subsidiary ofSony Group Corporation, founded in September 1995 bySony Music Entertainment Japan. The company focuses on planning, producing, and distributinganime series, both its own and those based on licensedintellectual properties (IPs). It also engages in relatedmultimedia initiatives.[4]
Aniplex's operations include the development and distribution oftheatrical films,video games, andmerchandise associated with itsmedia franchises. It releaseshome media, produces originalsoundtracks, and organizes events such asmusicals, stage performances, and live promotions. The company also managescopyrights andlicensing agreements. ThroughAniplex Online, itse-commerce platform, the company sells products directly to consumers.
Aniplex operates globally but has two regional headquarters:Aniplex America based inSanta Monica,California, US, while Aniplex China is based inShanghai. It co-ownsCrunchyroll, LLC with its sister company,Sony Pictures, which operates adirect-to-consumer (DTC) animestreaming service with 120 million registered users as of 2022.[5]
Having been established in September 1995 as a subsidiary ofSony Pictures Entertainment Japan under the name SPE Music Publishing,[2] the company received capital investment fromSony Music Entertainment Japan in January 1997, changing its name to SPE Visual Works.[2] After becoming a joint venture between SPEJ and SMEJ, it inheritedSony Music Group video productions, excluding SMEJ artists' music videos, in January 1998.[2]
Aniplex held their first Aniplex Online Fest on July 4–5, 2020,[6] to celebrate its anime projects, panels with staff and cast members, and musical performances.Sally Amaki of22/7 (Nanabun no Nijūni) served as emcee for the English version, streaming worldwide onYouTube. A Chinese podcast was available onBilibili.[7][8][9]
