Andrew Brian Frederick (born July 25, 1954) is an American former professionalfootballoffensive tackle in theNational Football League (NFL) for theDallas Cowboys,Cleveland Browns, andChicago Bears. He playedcollege football at theUniversity of New Mexico.
Frederick attendedSt. Joseph High School where he played astight end. He also practicedbasketball. He accepted a football scholarship from theUniversity of New Mexico, where he was converted into adefensive tackle.
In 2010, he was inducted into theUniversity of New Mexico Athletics Hall of Honor.[1]
Frederick was selected by theDallas Cowboys in the fifth round (137th overall) of the1977 NFL draft, to convert him into anoffensive lineman. As a rookie, he played onspecial teams and backed upRalph Neely atleft tackle, who was bothered by an injured knee. He was a part of theSuper Bowl XII winning team.
In1978, he was named the starter atright tackle to replacePat Donovan who moved to the left side to take the place of the retired Neely.[2] He was relegated into a reserve role after the fifth game, whenRayfield Wright finished his knee rehabilitation.
In1979, he was one of the last cuts in preseason, but was brought back after rookie tackle Richard Grimmett suffered a knee injury one week before the season opener. He contributed onspecial teams and as a backup.
In1980, he was the team's only backup tackle. He started in the eleventh game against theSt. Louis Cardinals, in place of an injuredJim Cooper. In1981, he remained as a backup tackle. On September 3,1982, he was waived after being passed on the depth chart by rookiePhil Pozderac.[3]
On September 9,1982, he was signed by theCleveland Browns as afree agent. On April 28,1983, he was traded theChicago Bears in exchange for past considerations.[4]
In1983, he started 6 games atright tackle for theChicago Bears. During the Bears'Super Bowl run in1985,[5] he was mostly used as an extratight end in goal line situations. He started one game in 1985, a Week 4 contest against Washington, filing in for an injuredJimbo Covert.
In1986, he was placed on theinjured reserve list with a toe injury. In1987, he failed the physical exam and did not make the team.[6]
