Andrew Colin NairneOBE (born 10 February 1960),[1] is director ofKettle's Yard, theUniversity of Cambridge’s modern and contemporary art gallery.[2]
Born inGuildford, Nairne graduated with an art history MA from theUniversity of St Andrews in 1983. He was the Visual Arts Director at theScottish Arts Council and for eight years he was the exhibitions director at theCentre for Contemporary Arts inGlasgow. He has also had a position at theIkon Gallery inBirmingham and was director ofDundee Contemporary Arts. His current role is director ofKettle's Yard inCambridge
Nairne is the former director ofModern Art Oxford,[3] a contemporary art gallery inOxford. He joined in 2001, when he renamed the gallery from the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford. Nairne coordinated enhancements to the museum building, and gave MOMA's substantial library of art books and catalogues toOxford Brookes University. He shifted the focus to exhibitions of contemporary artists, who have includedTracey Emin andStella Vine.
From 1998 to 2003, Nairne was a board member of thePier Arts Centre inStromness,Orkney. He was formerly chair of theVisual Arts and Galleries Association (VAGA). He was also visiting fellow atNuffield College,Oxford.
Nairne was formerly executive director of arts strategy at theArts Council England.[4]
He received theOrder of the British Empire in the2019 New Year Honours for services to Museums and to the Arts.[5]
