Club career

[edit]

Early career

[edit]

Originally amidfielder,[5] Maxsø went through the youth ranks ofBrøndby IF whom he joined when he was six years old.[6] In 2009, he was promoted to the under-17 team and competed for a starting position on midfield against the likes ofPierre-Emile Højbjerg,Andrew Hjulsager andFrederik Holst,[5] who were all regulars on theDanish national under-17 team.[7] In his early days at Brøndby, Maxsø did not stand out as a player as he was neither big nor particularly quick, but those who worked with him noted his constant desire to improve various aspects of his game.[7]

Nordsjælland

[edit]

In 2010, he joined theFC Nordsjælland youth academy and had a largegrowth spurt that made him taller and physically stronger, which meant that he could transition todefense more easily.[6]

On 9 December 2012, Maxsø made his professional debut forFC Nordsjælland, in aSuperliga match againstFC Copenhagen, where he was assigned to cover theirstriker,Andreas Cornelius.[8] Despite losing 4–1, Maxsø stated after the match that he felt his debut went "alright."[8] Two months later, he was one out of six under-19 players, who were invited to participate in the first-team training camp inLa Manga.[9]

Maxsø signed a contract extension with Nordsjælland in the summer of 2016 and turned down a transfer offer from Danish top side FC Copenhagen, citing a desire to play abroad.[10] While at the club, Maxsø grew out to become one of the most important players in Nordsjælland and a key player in defense. After having the role of vice-captain in the 2015–16 season, he became club captain in the 2016–17 season. On 11 January 2017, Maxsø revealed his intentions of leaving Nordsjælland in the summer of 2017 with the goal of being sold after the2017 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.[11]

Osmanlıspor

[edit]

On 4 August 2017, it was announced that Maxsø was sold to Turkish clubOsmanlıspor.[12] In hisSüper Lig debut againstYeni Malatyaspor he scored his first goal for the club but could not prevent his side losing 3–1.[13] He would struggle to find his footing in Osmanlıspor, and was taken out at halftime in the 4–2 loss toSivasspor on 17 September after being a part of a defense conceding four goals before half.[14] Maxsø had strong performances during the rest of the fall season, however, as he started in the first 15 matches.[15] Despite this, Osmanlıspor finished the first half of the season 16th out of 18 in the table.[16]

Maxsø was benched during almost the entire second half of the season. He played his first minutes of the second half of the season on 3 March 2018, coming on in the 84th minute forTortol Lumanza in a match againstKasımpaşa.[17][18] He left the club after its relegation from the Turkish Süperlig at the end of the season.

FC Zürich

[edit]

On 29 June 2018, Maxsø signed a three-year contract with SwissSuper League sideFC Zürich.[19] He made his league debut for the club on 23 September 2018 in a 1–0 home victory overFC Luzern. He played all ninety minutes of the match.[20] On 25 October, he was part of the starting lineup as Zürich won 3–2 overBayer 04 Leverkusen in theEuropa League group stage.[21] He would later also appear in theround of 32 matchups againstNapoli, where Zürich lost 5–1 on aggregate.[22] Maxsø scored his first goal for the club on 9 February 2019 in a local derby againstGrasshoppers, which was won 3–1.[23] He finished the season with 36 appearances for the club in which he scored one goal,[15] as Zürich ended seventh in the league missing out on European qualification by two points.[24]

KFC Uerdingen 05

[edit]

On 3 July 2019, German3. Liga clubKFC Uerdingen 05 announced that they had signed Maxsø.[25] On 2 September, he left the club by mutual agreement only two months and six appearances after his arrival, for personal reasons.[26] He later explained to Danish newspaperB.T. that his move to Uerdingen happened as part of a deal with Zürich, who had a cooperation agreement with the former.[27] He had initially expected to be sent on toBournemouth of thePremier League, with whom the two clubs also had an agreement. Bournemouth had scouted him in Osmanlıspor, and encouraged Maxsø to sign with their cooperation club, Zürich, with the goal to sign him later on, in case his performances kept improving.[27][28] However, as the transfer window closed, Maxsø explained that he was 'stuck' in Uerdingen 05 and had decided to buy himself out of his contract; something which according to him cost him millions ofDanish kroner, but was a necessary career move.[29]

Brøndby

[edit]

Maxsø joined Brøndby IF on a four-year contract on 9 September 2019.[3][30] On 15 September, he made his Superliga-debut for Brøndby in a 4–2 home win over his former team, Nordsjælland.[31] On 25 September, Maxsø scored his first goal for Brøndby, a vital equalizer in extra time in theDanish Cup againstSkive IK. The match ended in a 3–2 win for Brøndby.[32] Throughout the fall, he established himself as a leading figure in the central defense of managerNiels Frederiksen's3-5-2 formation and stabilising a formerly struggling defense together with fellow defendersSigurd Rosted andHjörtur Hermannsson.[33][34] In late January 2020, after the departure ofKamil Wilczek, Maxsø was namedclub captain after having only been at the club for six months.[35][4] He scored his first Superliga-goal for Brøndby on 28 June against his former club Nordsjælland, apenalty, as they won 2–0.[36] His performances led to him being named as the Danish Superliga Player of the Month for June 2020.[37]

On 11 December 2020, Maxsø received the award of Brøndby Player of the Year 2020, beating out fellow nomineesAnthony Jung andMorten Frendrup.[38] He scored his third goal – another penalty – for the club on 7 March 2021 in a 2–1 win in theNew Firm over Copenhagen.[39][40] On 24 May 2021, Maxsø lifted Brøndby's first league title in 16 years after a 2–0 win over Nordsjælland.[41]

In July 2021, Maxsø agreed to personal terms and was a medical away from signing withRussian Premier League clubRostov,[42] but the move fell through after the club had hired new managerYury Syomin who preferred a four-man defense and had, as a consequence, opted to signBastos on loan instead.[43][44] Maxsø would instead stay at Brøndby, and made his European debut for the club on 17 August in a 2–1 away loss toRed Bull Salzburg in the first leg of theplay-off round of theUEFA Champions League.[45] In the return leg, he scored his first goal of the season in another 2–1 loss.[46]
