Andrea Stella (Italian pronunciation:[anˈdrɛːaˈstɛlla]; born 22 February 1971) is an Italian engineer andmotorsport executive. Since 2023, Stella has served as team principal ofMcLaren inFormula One, winning twoWorld Constructors' Championship titles in2024 and2025.
Born and raised inOrvieto, Stella graduatedSapienza University of Rome with a degree inaerospace engineering and adoctorate inmechanical engineering. He began his career atFerrari in2000 as a performance engineer, later serving as therace engineer forKimi Räikkönen in2009, as well as forFernando Alonso from2010 to2014, who finished runner-up toSebastian Vettel in theWorld Drivers' Championship three times.
Stella moved toMcLaren in2015 as head of race operations, becoming the performance director by2018 and the racing director in2019. In2023, he replacedAndreas Seidl as team principal; inhis second season, he led the team to their firstWorld Constructors' Championship in26 years, which they successfully defended in2025 with ajoint-record six remaining Grands Prix. Under Stella, McLaren have achieved 20 race wins, 20pole positions, 21 fastest laps, and 61 podium finishes across three seasons.
Andrea Stella was born on 22 February 1971 inOrvieto, Umbria, Italy. In 1997, Stella graduated fromSapienza University of Rome with a degree inaerospace engineering.[1][2] He completed adoctorate in mechanical engineering with an experimental study on fluid dynamics of flames in 2000.[2]
Stella began his career atFerrari in 2000 as performance engineer for the test team, before becoming performance engineer forMichael Schumacher (2002–2006) and thenKimi Räikkönen (2007–2008). He moved to become race engineer for Räikkönen (2009) andFernando Alonso (2010–2014).[1] In 2006, he also worked as track engineer withValentino Rossi, when the motorbike racer tested with Ferrari with the idea of a prospective move to Formula One.[3]
Stella joinedMcLaren in 2015 as head of race operations, moving to Performance Director in 2018 and racing director in 2019.[1] In the latter role, he formed a triumvirate withJames Key as technical director and Piers Thynne as production director, all under team principalAndreas Seidl.[4][5]
On 13 December 2022, it was announced that Stella would replace Seidl as team principal of McLaren, ahead of the2023 season. In the2024 season, Stella led the team to its firstWorld Constructor's Championship win since 1998.
Stella is married to Michela Di Eugenio, with whom he has two children: Edoardo and Federico.[6]
