Acoso y derribo is traditional sport in thedoma vaquera equestrian tradition of Spain, in which cattle are brought to the ground by two riders, thegarrochista and theamparador, using thegarrocha or lance.[1] The horses used are often oftres sangres (Andalusian xArab xThoroughbred)[2] orHispano-Árabe stock.[citation needed]
The practice of acoso y derribo derives from thetentaderos, traditional tests of fighting spirit infighting cattle, and dates from the mid-nineteenth century. The first national championship took place inSalamanca in 1970.[3]
In 2010 theReal Federación Hípica Española [es] resolved to eliminate this competition from its official list of equestrian sports.[4]
The field for the competition is divided into four areas: thecorrales de querencia or holding pens for the cattle; therodeo, where the cattle are held at the start of the competition; thecorredero, where thegarrochista and theamparador perform theacoso, driving the target animal at high but controlled speed to thecuadrilatero orsoltadero, where thegarrochista performs thederribo, bringing the animal to the ground.[2][4]
