Amit Singh (born 18 March 1976) is an Indianmicrobiologist and professor in the Department of Microbiology & Cell Biology at theIndian Institute of Science. His research focuses onpathogenesis, including drug resistance mechanisms in bothmycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) andhuman immunodeficiency viruses (HIV).

Biography

[edit]

Amit Singh was born on 18 March 1976.[1] He earned a Bachelor of Science from theUniversity of Delhi, and a master's inBiotechnology from theIndian Institute of Technology Roorkee.[2] In 2004, he completed a PhD under the supervision of ProfessorAnil Kumar Tyagi at the University of DelhiSouth Campus. Subsequently, he conducted postdoctoral research in the lab of Dr. Adrie JC Steyn at theUniversity of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB).[3]

Upon returning to India in 2010 Singh held a Wellcome Trust-DBT Intermediate Fellowship at theInternational Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology. In January 2014 he became an assistant professor ofmicrobiology andcell biology at theIndian Institute of Science (IISc).[4] He leads a research group at the Centre for Infectious Disease Research,[5] investigating the mechanisms ofchronic human infections with a focus onMycobacterium tuberculosis andhuman immunodeficiency virus (HIV).[6][7][8]

Awards

[edit]

Singh has held a Wellcome Trust-DBT Senior Fellowship since 2016.[9][10] He received the 2017/18National Bioscience Award for Career Development from theDepartment of Biotechnology of theGovernment of India.[11]

Singh is a co-inventor on a patent titled "Shortening Tuberculosis Therapy and Reducing Relapse by Co-administering Chloroquine in TB and HIV-TB Co-infected Conditions," filed in 2020 and published in 2021.

In 2021, Singh was awarded theShanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology for his contributions to understanding host-pathogen interactions inMycobacterium tuberculosis and HIV.[12] In 2022, Singh was included in theAsian Scientist 100 list.
